Monohull VS Catamaran
Catamarans vs. monohull is a popular and common discussion with dozens of talking points. It’s a subject we’re not uniquely qualified nor experienced to debate. So why did we produce this video and write this blog? The simple answer is: catamarans vs. monohull doesn’t matter. Live your dream. That’s it. Don’t wait for the perfect time or the perfect boat. There is no perfect time. There is no perfect boat. Do it now. Live and love your adventure in any shape or form you can. It’s what we call passion for the passage.
Passion for the passage for us in this stage in our journey is about downsizing our life, purchasing, fixing, and learning our boat. That’s our current passage. But someone else’s passage doesn’t have to be prepping a boat to sail an ocean. It could be overlanding an RV to a national park. The passage could be rewiring a 12v electrical system. Or repiping a propane system. Or planting an organic garden. Passion for the passage is what helps us thrive within this non-traditional life we’ve chosen. We may be facing a dirty, damp, and stinky bilge but we know that is part of the passage.
The word passion, by definition, often includes terms such as irrational, uncontrollable, unreasonable. The classic definition of passion implies a blind intensity to achieve a goal without much thought. Passion for the passage in our lifestyle cannot mean we act irrationally. We must plan our passage. Part of the passion for our passage is precisely the forethought that goes into most everything we do. The careful research, study, reading, watching, trial and error, networking, planning, etc. all contribute to our passion for our passage. The planning is part of the experience that is enjoyable for us. Making the right decisions for us and our goals truly does allow for a little bit of classic passion so we can enjoy the passage knowing we made the best decision for us with the information we had.
Every decision aboard a boat is a tradeoff. And that’s one reason why we carefully decide what is best for us, our preferences and our goals. When we were shopping for a boat we did think about catamarans vs. monohulls. And some of those discussion topics included the following:
The above is just a snapshot of the considerations that can be made when deciding between a catamaran and a multihull. Just like with any boat, there are pros and cons and compromises. There isn’t one solution or answer for everyone in every situation. The point is, do your research, decide how and where you will take your boat, and make a decision that works best for you. And enjoy it. And do it sooner than later. And remember, wherever your passage takes you, have passion while you get there. That’s what a Yacht of Love is all about.
