5 Galley Must Haves
This week we discuss 5 galley must haves aboard our sailboat. These items have improved our cooking lives and we’re sharing them with you to hopefully help improve your culinary experience!
#1 - High or long-cuff oven mitts
We’re thrilled with these because of their high/long cuffs they protect our wrists and forearms from burns as we reach into the tiny oven opening. And having true gloves makes it so we can easily grab onto the entire hot surface with all our fingers for a good grip.
#2 - Pizza stone
This has been a game-changer for baking. It retains the heat, spreads the heat more evenly, and separates the pan from further from the flames. Be sure to measure the inside of your oven before ordering. No Amazon affiliate link because the only one we could find in the size we needed was from Bed Bath & Beyond.

#3 - Butter Mill butter dispenser
This actually made the honorable mention category in the best of 2022 from Freakin’ Reviews:
Matt would argue that this is #1 of 2022 just because it has simplified our butter dispensing and taken it to a whole other level. We just added butter and it changed everything! Keeping the butter safe and protected but with easy access within a butter dish on a boat just doesn’t make sense with the limited counter space and movement. The Butter Mill makes it very easy to store and use the butter stick all with one device.
#4 - Reusable paperless kitchen towels
Single-use paper on a boat is not sustainable. We have to schlep new rolls into the boat, store them, and then lug them away in the trash. So instead, washable and reusable paperless kitchen towels are better for us. Matt just needs to make sure not to use them to wipe up oily messes from the engine!

#5 - Plates and bowls
This may sound like an easy thing to procure. Plates are plates, right? Wrong! Not aboard a boat. It’s important that they must be unbreakable, with a high outer lip, and a non-skid bottom. We found the plates and bowls from Madison Bay Trading Company on Bed Bath & Beyond to fit all those criteria.
